My backup has been working fine for well over a year, without a glitch. However, this morning it failed to backup with the following error:

Failed:    Failed - 0x8004230f - IDispatch error #8463 - Retrying without VSS Writers
ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->AddToSnapshotSet((LPWSTR)volume.c_str(), GUID_NULL, &SnapshotID)" failed.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x8004230f
- Error text: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR
ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->BackupComplete(&pAsync)" failed.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x80042301
- Error text: VSS_E_BAD_STATE
ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->AddToSnapshotSet((LPWSTR)volume.c_str(), GUID_NULL, &SnapshotID)" failed.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x8004230f
- Error text: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR

Gathering Windows Events - Please Wait
    Backup aborted! - Failed To Create Volume Snapshot. Failed - 0x8004230f - IDispatch error #8463

I have spent the last 5 hours checking both the FAQ and forums for various information/solutions but unable to solve the problem.

Any help on resolving this issue would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried rebooting the computer?

If you boot into your rescue disk you can do the backup from there.  The rescue disk does not require VSS to do its backups.

Thanks for your reply, appreciated.

Yes - I've rebooted the computer a number of times.

Using the rescue disk is not an option as my system has been doing unattended incremental backups overnight, for over a year, without a single problem. I would like to return to the status quo of automatic unattended backups without having to resort to a manual backup using the rescue disk.

Have you tried running the VSSFIX utility?

Has an OS update, another software program or new hardware been installed since the last time you were able to backup without the VSS error?  All of those could result in that error.

Go to the Log tab in Reflect and grab the VSS log for the job, which is separate from the job log.  I've shown an example of where to find it below.  It will likely be quite long, so if you want to post it here, it would probably be best to copy/paste its contents into a Notepad file and then attach that file to a post, which you can do on this forum by clicking the Insert button below the text box and then selecting "Add File".  I don't know whether I personally will be able to help based on its contents, but Macrium developers monitor these forums, and considering that the job log error points to an issue with a certain VSS provider, the VSS log would likely identify which one and therefore might help someone else suggest an appropriate fix.

I suspect that disabling Avira is not enough to remove it as an additional VSS Provider, which is what VSS is complaining about.

From an elevated command prompt, issue the command: vssadmin list providers.  This is what you should get (only 1 provider, Microsoft's)
C:\WINDOWS\system32>vssadmin list providers
