Whenever I run a Differential Backup for SQL databases, I receive message: "It appears that a third party backup operation has broken the backup chain."

Even if I run a Differential Backup immediately after a Full SQL backup I still get this message.

Hi @vertigo3d

Thanks for posting. SQL backups will be recorded in the database including the application that made the backup. This history can be seen by running the following query:
SELECT bs.database_name AS 'Database Name',
bs.backup_start_date AS 'Backup Start',
bs.backup_finish_date AS 'Backup Finished',
bs.description AS 'Backup Vendor',
DATEDIFF(MINUTE, bs.backup_start_date, bs.backup_finish_date) AS 'Duration (min)',
bmf.physical_device_name AS 'Backup File',
CASE
WHEN bs.[type] = 'D'
THEN 'Full Backup'
WHEN bs.[type] = 'I'
THEN 'Differential Database'
WHEN bs.[type] = 'L'
THEN 'Log'
WHEN bs.[type] = 'F'
THEN 'File/Filegroup'
WHEN bs.[type] = 'G'
THEN 'Differential File'
WHEN bs.[type] = 'P'
THEN 'Partial'
WHEN bs.[type] = 'Q'
THEN 'Differential partial'
END
AS 'Backup Type',
ROUND(((bs.backup_size/1024)/1024),2) AS 'Backup Size (MB)',
ROUND(((bs.compressed_backup_size/1024)/1024),2) AS 'Compressed Backup Size (MB)'
FROM msdb..backupmediafamily bmf
INNER JOIN msdb..backupset bs
ON bmf.media_set_id = bs.media_set_id
ORDER BY bs.backup_start_date DESC

Macrium will check the backup history when a backup is made and ensure that no other software has created a backup  It is possible that other backup software has broken the backup chain for Macrium Reflect. If you create a full backup this should restore the backup chain for the database. Once you identify the other backup software, please ensure it does not take backups of the same databases as Macrium Reflect.

Kind regards.
