The instructions for preparing a USB stick as rescue media say "find disk number". What is a disk number and how do I find it?

That's only if you need to do it manually, which you normally won't.  But to find it, open Command Prompt, enter "diskpart", then type "list disk".  You should be able to find out which disk number belongs to your USB stick based on the size information shown.  And if you're preparing a USB stick manually, you'll be using diskpart to set it up anyway.
