I am trying to  copy  my laptop hard disk from  a 650 gb western digital
hard drive to a kingston 240 gb SSD.
I have  a macrium image backup of the drive which was taken after removing data ans shrinking the partitions to size.
 restoring the image to the ssd drive resulted in a failure error message
 restore failed write failed 22 invalid argument writefilesystemdata failed
pdatarun== null remapmftrecordfailed

I put the original hard drive in a usb caddy and  tried to clone it to  the ssd  ( in  a  usb hdd cradle)
 and got another error

failed to create volume snapshot result code 0x80042302

what am i doing wrong the backup image verified  perfectly and i what is the best way to clone from a  larfer hdd to smaller ssd

The 0x80042302 error that you got when attempting to clone indicates a problem with your Windows system's volume shadow service (VSS).  See the KB article entitled Troubleshooting Microsoft VSS errors and note in particular the section entitled Make sure that the VSS service isn't disabled.

Regardless of the type of target drive involved (SSD or "spinner") managing either an image restoration or a cloning operation is handled in pretty much the same way.  In either case, you can resize individual partitions as necessary to make them fit provided that the total space available is sufficient for the total amount of actual usage of all source partitions.  For details on cloning, see the KB article Cloning a disk.
