Local repositories - purpose/need of credentials

When creating a local repository, there is a spot to provide authentication credentials; this is the same screen where you put in the path for the location repository.  On a hunch, I left this blank and just put in the path.  It allowed me to create the repository without credentials and I was able to run a test backup.  Everything ran fine - I see the image on local drive of the managed server.

So my question is, what is the purpose of the credentials?  In what scenario would I need this?  It appears to work without it.
Thanks

Hi NK,
An agent will write data as SYSTEM to a local repository when it's a local disk, but it's also possible to set up some more advanced scenarios such as one where the the local repository is a network share which is visible to the agent but not visible to the Site Manager server. In this case, the credentials would be used to access that share. For the majority of cases they should be unnecessary, which is why the fields are optional.
