Hello community

I set up a backup on my computer, but I'm getting a reading error in the log file. Macrium Reflect cannot access files because they are being used by another process. The pc is currently running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (without the annyversary update).

I edited the log a little bit for privacy reasons. I replaced my username with %username%, my E-Mail Adress with "privateEmailAdress" and the german error with the english one. The german error is: "Der Prozess kann nicht auf die Datei zugreifen, da sie von einem anderen Prozess verwendet wird." and I replaced it with: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Here's the full log:

Hello,

A third party application appears to be interfering with Reflect and stopping the access of the files . Can you please try a Windows 'Clean boot' to help isolate the cause, as described here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

It should not be a problem as the F&F back up still completes but the above procedure should clear up the issue.

Kind Regadrs
Daniel.

Check Reflect's VSS log for that backup operation to see if it provides more specific VSS error information.  If so, have you tried Reflect's "Fix VSS Problems" utility as per this KB article?  Additional VSS troubleshooting suggestions and links are provided in this KB article.  Run the command "vssadmin list writers" at an elevated command prompt for a list of VSS writers with their current state and last error.

I already tried the "Fix VSS Problems" utility. Also some questions/notes to the second KB article:

1. I ran the command 'vssadmin list writers' but no VSS writer ever had an error.
2. I went through all error messages in the event viewer from today, couldn't find anything relating to 'VSS', 'Shadow Copy' or 'VolSnap'. I searched in 'Event Viewer' > 'Windows Logs' > 'Application'
3. VSS service is set to 'manual'. On other PCs with Macrium Reflect, everything works fine when this service is set to manual. Also i changed this service to automatic before I wrote a topic in this forum, but it didnt' work so I changed it back to manual.
4. Is the software 'VSSfix 64bit' which you can download in this KB article the same as the one provided in the Macrium Reflect Software (the 'Fix VSS Problems' utility)? If so I don't necessarily need to re-register the VSS components with this Batch-File, or should I do it anyway?

Just as an additional note, I had Acronis previously installed on this computer, but removed it and cleaned everything up with their CleanUp Tool. On other PCs everything works fine and they also had installed Acronis previously, just this PC creates that error.

I get the VSS log always with the E-Mail when the backup succeeded/failed. I checked the log but couldnt find any error. I post it here, maybe you see something unusual:

Perhaps I should mention first that I'm just a fellow user and have no special knowledge about Relect's "built-in" functions.  So I'm not able to say whether its "Fix VSS Problems" menu option does or doesn't do all the same things as the downloadable 'VSSfix 64bit' utility.  I suspect the latter may include some additional steps, but that's just a guess.  It's up to you to decide if it's worth trying.  It does seem reasonably clear, however, that VSS shadow copy access failure is at the root of the issue you're seeing.

The only thing I notice in the log that looks somewhat suspicious to me are those two "nameless" exclusion lines (Excluding writer '') where it appears to be trying to exclude something that can't be properly identified.  Explaining their precise significance, however, would require someone with knowledge in greater depth than I possess.

As a former Acronis TI user myself, I can only say that getting rid of all its "leftovers" isn't always easy, especially in the case of its drive and volume device class filters, but they shouldn't normally interfere with other VSS functions even if they are left behind.  Having said that, there are exceptions to every rule, of course, and Windows own "Disk Clean-up" utility accomplishes nothing at all for that issue.

Other than that, I guess the only other suggestion I can offer would be to open a direct support ticket request that includes a link to this forum topic.

I am a recovering ATI user as well...;-). I used a utility called IObit Uninstaller to ensure all the ATI code was removed from my system when I made the switch. Don't think it will help with your VSS issue but it does do a good job of completely uninstalling software. The free version is all you need.

There is one other point that I neglected to mention in my earlier reply.  Windows updates use VSS to create restore points amongst other things.  So if your Reflect backup operation happens to coincide with a background Windows update process (which isn't always apparent) the VSS usage by the former can interfere with its usage by the latter.  If that's what happened, it should not recur after the Windows update is complete and the system has been rebooted.  Probably irrelevant in your case since you also got a bad result with a clean boot.

Thank you all very much for your help!

The User probably gets a new SSD soon with a new Windows 10 Installation, so I hope that the problems will dissapear after the fresh installation In case he doesnt get a new SSD, I will open a support ticket.

I've been browsing, and I'm pulling this thread back to the top of the pile because no solution was found and it shows a fundamental troubleshooting methodology failure. Learning how to troubleshoot makes life much easier. Reading and understanding error messages is a prime requirement.

Juarx, who originated this thread, provided a long list of error messages, like this one:

"\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy12\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Anwendungsdaten\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\V01.log"

None of the replies mentions these error messages, even though VSS is doing it's best to point out exactly where the error occurs. In the case of the example above, Windows  has control (using) of a file called V01.log.

In another, the error location is shows exactly which application is involved and what file VSS wants to copy:

"\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy12\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\Settings\settings.dat"

Several other error messages identify other files and processes preventing VSS from copying files.

Rather than blindly guessing about what "could" be the problem, wouldn't it be better to follow the clues provided, and use the tools available to find the cause? (The tools cited below are available on all Windows systems after XP.)

Using the Windows Resource monitor (%windir%\system32\perfmon.exe /res) will show exactly what Windows applications are doing.
Using Sysinternals/Process Explorer (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processexplorer.aspx) also provides detailed information on system operation including listing the threads and files each process is using.

However, just a brief glance at the error list reveals that Windows Cortana is running in the background, probably doing routine housework (or that Juarx doesn't know not to run other applications when doing drive maintenance—and also doesn't realize that the files omitted from the VSS shadow copy are not exactly crucial files because anything in an AppData folder is a setting or a log).

The lesson here is to look for the actual problem, not try random solutions.

Tony
