After Anniversary update, when I try to make a new Rescue disk, it tell me I need to update, but then I get the following error:
---------------------------
Reflect
---------------------------
An error occurred extracting the Macrium Reflect Windows PE files.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Any suggestions?

The strange and various results of the W10 AU seem endless, but W10 updates have been known to misplace things and even remove them altogether sometimes.

Assuming that you use PE-10 for rescue media building under Windows 10, the default location for the base files is "C:\ProgramData\Macrium\Reflect\Windows Kits\10".  Check that location and tell us what's there, if anything.  You should see an "Assessment and Deployment Kit" subfolder containing two sub-subfolders: "Windows Preinstallation Environment" and "Deployment Tools".  If missing, you may need to re-download and re-install using the Reflect download agent if the rescue media "wizard" can't/won't do it for you automatically.

Oops, Yes, using PE-10. Both directories are at that location.

BTW, the waiklog.txt file has this error:

'"WAIKFiles15x64.exe" "c:\boot\macrium\WA10KFiles\mount" -notech -x64' FAILED - Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Ahah.  That's a horse of a slightly different colour.  It indicates a problem with getting Reflect's own WinPE files from their "WAIKFiles15x64.exe" self-extracting container.  It should be located in the "C:\Program Files\Macrium\Reflect" folder along with the other Reflect application files.  The "wizard" then runs it during the rescue media build process telling it to extract itself into the target mount folder for the WIM image.  Apparently, according to the message, it wasn't able to find that "WAIKFiles15x64.exe" file to run it.  If it's missing, re-installation of the Reflect application itself may be the only solution.

Good.  You're welcome.

two years later ...
I'm having exactly this problem
I created a PE disk a while back, now I want to repeat the process to a USB drive
If I re-install Macrium, I believe my scheduled backups will be retained because the definition files are stored elsewhere.
But what about the defaults that I have set up  - will they be preserved?
Thanks, Steve

If you choose to uninstall Reflect, you’ll see checkboxes to remove various items, but all of those are UNCHECKED by default, which means they will normally be preserved. If you reinstall Reflect without first uninstalling, then yes all of that will be preserved as well. Scheduled tasks and definition files are technically separate entities though. The definition files themselves do not actually store the scheduled tasks, the latter of which exist solely in Windows Task Scheduler, even though they’re shown together in Reflect. Still, the default behavior is to preserve definition files, scheduled tasks, logs, preferences, and WinPE files.

Excellent, thanks for that.
I guess one other question I should ask ... is it necessary to reinstall Reflect to solve the current issue? It's tempting to think that I could copy the missing folder from some other source, but perhaps the resources in the folder are custom prepared by Reflect at installation time?

I’m not sure. You may be able to just delete the WinPE files cache somewhere under C:\ProgramData by default (can’t check the exact path right now) and then have Reflect prompt to redownload them the next time you run through the Rescue Media wizard, but that’s only a marginal time savings and a less certain chance of success. I personally would just uninstall and reinstall, making sure to choose to remove the WinPE files during uninstallation. If you still have trouble, third-party anti-virus has occasionally been found to interfere with Reflect’s use of WinPE files and therefore its ability to download the PE files and/or build Rescue Media if you happen to be using any such solution.
