John Gray, I have seen other mentions of this but I myself have never seen any of these in my environment list, User or System.  I'm kinda baffled as to where and/or how you are displaying these.  I am not using Reflect's scheduling system.

Run the SET command with an elevated command prompt (run CMD.EXE as Admin). You will see them.

I can only assume that v6 is using them in essentially the same way as Nick explained in reply to this v5 forum posting: "Environment variables are created to allow MS-DOS batch files and VBScript files to access image and backup files created after the backup has completed. They are only there to persist after the backup and have no purpose during the backup. [...] Volatile environment variables only exist for the current user in the current Windows session, it doesn't matter whether the user is an Admin or not. They are always deleted on reboot."

If  I understand John Gray correctly, he would prefer some other type of volatile storage for those variables.  The registry might work for VBScript, but probably not for MS-DOS.  One wonders if the latter still matters now that PowerShell is the preferred alternative.

John Gray,  I have done that and I do not have any "MACRIUM" variables.  Does Reflect have to be running AND performing a backup?

I write BATch files 'for a living', and I see no use for any of the variables which are created in any Reflect BATch file I've created so far, and for me they just get in the way!

Perhaps there could be an option somewhere which allowed the creation of these environment variables (the default being DON'T create them).

It seems rather invidious to have to plough through the registry's HKCU\VolatileEnvironment every so often and delete well over 300 registry keys, only to have them recreated (presumably) by the next Reflect backup?

I'm no pro at any of this but am trying to understand...  Anyway, if I open an "Administrator: Command Prompt" on my Win8.1 system and type SET I do not see the variables as shared by the op.  Same if I open an "Administrator: Windows PowerShell" and type "Get-ChildItem Env:".

@op
Have you used Macrium's Reflect business product which runs from a thumb drive instead of having to be installed on the computer, by chance?  Just a shot in the dark...

The only other difference I can think of is that I only use Backup Definition Files and VBScript Files within Reflect.  I don't use PowerShell Files or MS-DOS Batch Files.

Hi John

Thanks for posing.

The environment variables are deleted on reboot and are used when the generated VBScript and PowerShell scripts act on previously created backup files/sets. All location and names of all files in the set are saved to volatile environment variables.  You can see this if you generate a script file to 'Duplicate Files'.

We'll add a reg entry in the next update to remove the variables if you don't want this.

Kind Regards

Nick

Thanks, Nick!

Last night, after the final "Incrementals Forever" backup run finished, I ran a couple of BATch files to delete all those registry variables found under the key "HKCU\Volatile Environment" which started "MACRIUM" (in fact, as you would see from my first post, they started "MACRIUM_2749" and "MACRIUM_2750"), and the same from the Environment Variables (shown via SET MACRIUM) in the Command Prompt window.

This morning, while the first backup run started, I monitored that registry key, and initially only saw the variable
MACRIUM_PREFIX   REG_SZ   MACRIUM_2762
was created, but a few minutes into the backup the registry key "HKCU\Volatile Environment" was populated by the usual huge number of values, all starting "MACRIUM_2762", and these persist after the backup job has finished.  At no time before, during, or after the backup job were there any environment variables starting "MACRIUM_2762".

Please could I ask whether the original environment variables/registry values (starting MACRIUM_2749 and MACRIUM_2750) were residual?  What meaning do these numbers have?

Thanks again!

It's not as 'simple' as I had imagined!

The second backup run of the day has taken place, and during the first part of it I find
* the HKCU\Volatile Environment key's value MACRIUM_PREFIX now has the value MACRIUM_2763
During the rest of the backup
* the HKCU\Volatile Environment key now has values starting MACRIUM_2763 as well as those for the previous run starting MACRIUM_2762
* the environment variables corresponding to the previous '2762' run now are populated

So it seems that getting rid of the Macrium environment variables and Volatile Environment registry values is like a game of Whack-a-Mole - you no sooner remove them but they pop up again!
Ho-hum...
