It turns out, the old laptop has an AMD process where the one I found on eBay is intel. 

I tried to boot the intel laptop with the recovery DVD, it took a very long time, but   when it started up, I got the reflect splash screen but then it froze and the last
message in the reflect box was that it was check one of the partitions

I'm not sure how to continue, but is it possible to restore the OS and use the reflect recovery to update the hardware to intel?

Was this partition it locked up on Partition 3 of any given hard disk?  If so, try rebooting the Rescue Media up to 5 times in a row.  Starting sometime around Version 8, I've seen and others have reported the same issue random freezes analyzing Partition 3 when Rescue Media is booted.  Since it's random and causes Reflect to freeze, there's no way really to diagnose it.

yes --- that was the case ---  thanks ---  so it is possible to use the "new hardware"   option of the restore to switch to intel from amd? 

I don't know that.  ReDeploy might work in a case like that, but different processors might be problematic.  I've never used ReDeploy before.
