On several occasions lately, my desktop has not wanted to reboot after an "unexpected" shutdown.  Like today I inadvertently disconnected the power.

When it first tries to reboot, the round dots spin, seemingly forever.  Like minutes.  Completely disconnect the power, wait a little, and try to restart.  Dots again and fail.  Eventually restarted again and used DELETE to boot to UEFI, didn't need to change anything then restarted.  Windows blue screen came up with the familiar "Your PC couldn't start properly.  After multiple attempts ...  Error code 0xc0000001.  You need to use recovery tools.  Press Enter to try again."

I tried again and it started normally.

My question is can I do anything to change this behavior?  I see this in Help "Fix Boot problems for GPT/UEFI Boot Systems" but only available if I boot with my Rescue USB drive.  Should I try this - boot my Rescue and go to "Fix Windows boot problems?"

Thanks everyone.

Fix Boot Problems is more likely to fix problems where Windows doesn't even try to boot.  If it starts and then fails with an error code, especially if that happens intermittently, I wouldn't expect that to fix the issue.  You might try running CHKDSK /R against your Windows partition to see if there might be file system issues.  Another possibility especially if Windows can take minutes to load is a drive that is failing and is suffering more read problems that require reattempts or result in read failures.

Some more thoughts -- what other things are ahead of the hard disk in the normal boot path in the BIOS boot settings for a normal boot that might take some time to fail. Are there any other devices such as external hard drives that were also affected by the power failure.  @TR would you please tell us the list and order of BIOS boot paths.  I there anything in the paths that might take a long time to come online after the powerfail?

Working on your suggestion.  Drive is NvMe working perfectly since install about a year ago.  System boots normally after a normal shutdown.  The unplanned shutdowns are causing the problem.

Back to my PC boot problem.  At first I said I was hard to restart after an unplanned shutdown, then changed that to hard to start after any shutdown.  Yesterday it became will not start after any shutdown, will not boot Macrium Rescue Media which did work about a year ago in the same PC.  And will not start to UEFI.  Black screen, no blue, spinning dots or the "splash" screen with Press <Del> to ...!

No POST beep but I think my mobo (MSI Z490 w/overclock) doesn't have one of those little speakers.

So I disconnected power and data from my hard drives, the two spinners, and an SSD.  Left the NvMe's (2) on the mobo as well as the tiny Intel wireless card.  Booted totally normally (yay).  Reconnected power to the three drives, booted normally.  Reconnected data one at a time, booted normally each.

Now back to normal, every drive reconnected and seemingly normal.  Restarted several times, normal every time.

Weird.
