One can specify the following schedule for a chosen image type (Differential for example): Monthly, Every, Fourth, Sunday - but not Fifth Sunday.

Although there might be an approximate substitute, this seems like a design oversight that could and should be easily fixed.

It seems to me that a fifth Sunday (or any fifth day) would result in an inconsistent backup schedule since a fifth Sunday occurs only 3 to 5 times a year with little consistency.  Backups are best done on a consistent and frequent schedule.  And while you may know what you would be getting by using this day, an unsuspecting user may not realize it is not a good idea to use the fifth occurrence of a day in a month.  I think Macrium would be ill-advised to include an option which is not consistent with good practice.

I'm not understanding how a fifth Sunday (or any other day of the week) would cause an inconsistency.

My example is a scheme that has a full backup on the first Sunday of the month and a differential on all the others. Without the "fifth" option I'm not going to have any backup at all on that fifth Sunday.

If no fifth Sunday occurs in a month, nothing happens and there is no harm, including any inconsistency, at least that I can see.

Thank you for your clarification.  The way I read your post it sounded like you wanted to run a backup on the 5th Sunday of every month (or months that had a 5th Sunday).  However, your clarification of what you want to do, makes sense.

@AlphaOne

Thanks for your post and sorry for the delay in replying.

There is no need to specify the 'Fifth' Sunday for your backup scheme. Simply schedule your Differential for *every* Sunday and and your Full on the first Sunday at the same time.  On the first Sunday only the Full will run as it will take precedence over the Differential.

When multiple backups from the same backup definition are scheduled to run at the same time,  a Full takes precedence over a Differential and a Differential takes precedence over an Incremental.

Kind Regards

Nick

I did realize the workaround, but suggested the Fifth option as preferable to a workaround.

I think it would be better design to be able to state explicitly what is wanted rather than rely on a scheduling implementation to not perform what is specified (the first Sunday Differential).

Not having it isn't a serious limitation but does make the application less elegant I think.
