Attempting to create rescue media in boot menu, get popup box saying "Add boot menu failed - unable to create temporary store." The log shows:
"bcdedit.exe" /import c:\temp_bcd\bcd /clean The operation completed successfully.
"bcdedit.exe" /export c:\temp_bcd\bcd The store export operation has failed. The handle is invalid.
"bcdedit.exe" /createstore c:\temp_bcd\bcd The store creation operation has failed. Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
These directories/files do not exist on my machine, and as far as I can tell there are no permissions issues. Please advise.

If restarting the PC doesn’t fix it, do you have third-party anti-virus? Some of them interfere with BCD modifications because there are certainly malicious reasons to modify that. But there are also legitimate reasons, as in Reflect’s case.

BTW, my version of Reflect is Home Edition 64-bit 8.0 Build 6979.

Some AV doesn’t allow itself to be fully disabled. I remember somebody here had trouble with Rescue Media builds that weren’t resolved until they completely uninstalled their AV. (I think that’s the only sensible thing to do with third-party AV in general these days, but that's another topic.) But if that isn’t an option in your book, you could try adding RMBuilder.exe to the trusted application list if Avast offers such a thing.

Have not had issues with this third-party AV before, and works fine on a different machine. For the sake of trying it, I uninstalled Avast, rebooted and tried the boot menu again. Issue still persists with the same errors.

Ok, well good on you for ruling out that variable. Some quick Googling surfaces some other results for that error when BCDEdit is used with the export and import commands, but I didn’t look through them extensively. BCDEdit is a Windows command line tool, not a Reflect component, so there may be something else going on. Others who might know that tool better or even Macrium Support reps might chime in here, otherwise you could submit a formal support ticket and link to this thread. Sorry I don’t have a better answer at the moment!

Update: I was able to create a formal ticket with Macrium after all. Hopefully, they will help even though my support is expired.

I use Avast free and have never had any issues between it and Reflect.

I was able to find some log files on my win 11 system that might give you a clue about what step failed. . Many might be named *.log but you can Open With Notepad or any text editor. 1. C:\ProgramData\Macrium\waik has files bootlog.txt and waiklog.txt 2. C:\ProgramData\Macrium has some logs, in particular: File: LastRescueMedia.log 3. C:\ProgramData\Macrium\RMBuilder File: rescuemedia.log
