Talented Member Group: Forum Members Posts: 46, Visits: 128	There have been lots of forum complaints about this for over a year and I have yet to read a solid solution. When trying to create a USB recovery media, I immediately encounter Error Code 0, which says that it can't write Track Zero. First of all, there is no track zero on a USB stick, so the error message makes no sense. Also, the Macrium suggestion that a different USB stick be chosen, is worthless advice. Lots of people have tried lots of different brands and none of them seem to work. One guy, even bought 7 different USB sticks and none of them worked. But if it is a USB stick problem (which I doubt it is), then Macrium needs to publish a definitive list of what USB devices can serve as a rescue media. This was broken back in V5, this needs to be fixed and decently documented once and for all. I just started using Macrium yesterday and I'm disappointed already. This inexcusably lame. Download the excellent freeware 'Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way' at https://rufus.akeo.ie/ It works perfectly. No installation required. Create bootable USB drives the easy way Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. It can be especially useful for cases where: you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.) you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS you want to run a low-level utility Windows XP or later, 32 or 64 bit doesn't matter. Once downloaded, the application is ready to use. Download the executable and run it – no installation is necessary. ============================================= Notes on ISO Support: All versions of Rufus since v1.1.0 allow the creation of a bootable USB from an ISO image (.iso). Creating an ISO image from a physical disc or from a set of files is very easy to do however, through the use of a CD burning application, such as the freely available CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn. Notes on UEFI & GPT support: Since version 1.3.2, Rufus support UEFI as well as GPT for installation media, meaning that it will allow you to install Windows 7, Windows 8 or Linux in full EFI mode. However, Windows Vista or later is required for full UEFI/GPT support. It is simply a fact that some flash drives cannot be made bootable in their "as shipped" condition. That's not Macrium's fault. Nor is it Macrium's responsibility to advise flash drive purchasers about every maker's variable practices and quirks in that regard. In many cases, however, there are ways to work around the problem and some suggestions are offered in the KB article on the subject. Also, in addition to Trapper's suggestion, see this thread. Proficient Member Group: Awaiting Activation Posts: 193, Visits: 379	I usually use DISKPART to solve this issue. Works every time for me. I use the following: Prepare a Flash Drive for Macrium 1. From command line type "Cmd" 2. Type "Diskpart" 3. Type "Select disk x" (x = disk number of the flash drive. BE CAREFUL to get the correct drive) 4. Type "Clean" (Diskpart succeeded in cleaning the disk) 5. Type "Create partition primary" (Diskpart succeeded in creating the specified partition) 6. Type "Format fs=fat32 quick" (Diskpart successfully formatted the volume) 7. Type "Active" (Diskpart marked the current partition as active) 8. Type "Assign" (Diskpart successfully assigned the drive letter or mount point) 9. Type "Exit" (Leaving Diskpart) 10. Type "Exit" (This will return you to Windows) And Rufus also works as Trapper pointed out. Edited 7 March 2015 10:47 PM by BGregory

Macrium should have built the functionality of Rufus into their system instead of spitting out an unhelpful error message. I hope they read this and put it high on their to-do list. I was going to settle for writing to DVD, but this is so much better. I tried BGregory's recipe on another USB stick and they worked just as well. Thanks for your quick replies.
