Do I need to (somehow)first  format the replacement m.2 drive for a bare metal restore using the rescue media?

If the System is the same and only a replacement SSD is being built, "bare metal" restore (reDeploy) is not required.  A standard restoration to the new SSD should work just fine, no pre-format required either.

No prep needed, although “bare metal restore” is not the same thing as a restore scenario that involves ReDeploy, Froggie. A bare metal restore is a restore to a system that doesn’t have an OS yet. If the original system had its HDD/SSD replaced, then you (typically) wouldn’t need ReDeploy, but that scenario would still be a bare metal restore.

Got it. For me, "bare metal" just refers to a complete re-install of the OS onto the same type of hardware, in this case a simple SSD replacement.

Thanks for the prompt responses.
