I've been trying to update a PC that's running Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 but it keeps failing with the error below. I guess the machine at one point had Macrium Reflect installed with the PE environment. It's not installed anymore and I've already set the regkey for "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WimMount\ImagePath" back to "windows\system32\drivers\winmount.sys" but it still won't let me perform the OS upgrade.

The winmount.sys file is in that path (c:\windows\system32\drivers). I've also ran sfc/ scannow and "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" but can't get it to work. Is there a way to fix the changes made by Macrium?

If DriverPath is not system32\drivers\wimount.sys, that is likely the issue. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WimMount\ImagePath should be pointed to system32\drivers\wimmount.sys.

I think there's another thread here on the forum where another user encountered the same problem and managed to fix it.  Do a search through the forums with the search function for Winmount.sys and see if you can find this thread.  It required running some kind of .REG file, I think.

I looked for the key string, but only found this thread.  I think the thread was this one:

Check out that and see if any of that thread applies to your situation.

Ah I think it worked! It made it past the usual failure point of 40%. I'll post back tomorrow as it's getting late.

Well, good; we got lucky.  Smile  I just happened to have looked at that thread in the past, happened to remember it, and looked at the last few posts in Installation where I thought it might have been posted.  There, I found it.
