I've got a USB flash drive I've been trying to prepare for USB Rescue Media.  After List Disk, the Status of the flash drive disk number is No Media.  Is there any way I can get "media" back on this flash drive?  Or is it just dead?  Sorry, but I'm not that familiar with DISKPART.  I've just been going by Macrium's KB.

EDIT 1: I managed to sort of get something working with this flash drive.  Reflect was able to format a Rescue Media out of it, creating a 1 GB FAT32 partition and an unallocated partition with the rest of the 128 GB.  I used Disk Management to create a 2nd NTFS partition with all of the unallocated space.  Now, though, I have 2 partitions on this flash drive, the bootable FAT32 one and the NTFS one.  Is there a way I can get this flash drive back to 1 partition, such as exFAT, FAT32, or NTFS?  I realize it probably can't boot, but, right now, I'd like to get this flash drive back to a "factory default" position of one partition with all the available 128 GB of space on it.  I want to give it away as I no longer have use for it and I don't want to confuse the average user who might end up with this as a flash drive with 2 partitions on it,since that's not the norm.

After you run "list disk", enter "select disk X", replacing X with the number of your flash drive as identified by the output of "list disk".  Then enter "clean".  Every now and then I've seen that fail on a flash drive, but if it does, just enter "clean" again, and it should succeed.  If it still fails, the drive might be dead.  But if it succeeds, you'll now have a completely uninitialized flash drive, at which point you can either set it up via Disk Management or additional diskpart commands.

I tried Clean once before but it said there was no media to clean.  I didn't try a 2nd Clean attempt, though.  Let me try that.


Actually, Disk Management is kind of what got me into this situation in the first place.  I was testing creating Rescue Media on a SanDisk that wasn't writing for Rescue Media before.  Reflect created a 1 GB FAT32 partition and the rest as unallocated space.  I created a 2nd NTFS partition from that space.  I then wanted to return it to its "factory default" state, so I used Disk Management to delete first the NTFS partition and then the FAT32 one.  I then tried creating a New Simple Volume but Disk Management did nothing.  None of the New options did anything.  Disk Management just sat there waiting for instructions.  So, I tried the DiskPart steps in the Macrium KB, but got nowhere because of the No Media status of the flash drive.


Yeah, Clean just keeps returning There is no media in the service both times.  The Size and Free spaces are also both 0 GB.


This is really weird.  The partitions are there.  Data can be written to them.  I used Reflect to create Rescue Media to the FAT32 partition and wrote Reflect images to the NTFS one.  I Verified the image contents on the NTFS partition.  So, the flash drive does work, yet DiskPart seems to think it's dead.  I can't explain this one.  I repeated the previous steps and they do still work, so the flash doesn't appear to be dead, except to DiskPart.


EDIT 1: I did think of sort of a workaround.  I just used Disk Management to delete the FAT32 partition.  This "restored" the flash drive to 1 partition, which I formatted again as exFAT for the average user.  Of course, this does remove 1 GB of available space from the flash drive, but it does work.  And since I'm giving it away, someone can just deal with the cost of losing 1 GB in exchange for a free 127 GB of flash storage.
