As a temporary solution to this problem I had uninstalled CBT driver v7.2.3832 (Reflect v7.2.3858) using mrcbttools.exe. As instructed I rebooted the computer after uninstalling. However, without CBT driver every backup I make stops with a “VSS timeout” error. The option “Fix VSS problems” does not solve the issue. Disabling “Enable Changed Block Tracking for Incremental Backups” in the Advanced Incrementals settings of the Advanced settings also does not solve this issue. Installing the CBT driver again, solves the issue.

I have tested the situation with Reflect v7.1.3319 on the same machine, and that Reflect version does work correctly without CBT driver. The issue therefore seems to be related to Reflect v7.2.3858.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Does it make a difference if you uninstall CBT through Programs and Features, i.e. by clicking Reflect, selecting Change, then Modify, and unchecking CBT?  The reason I ask is that several users here uninstalled CBT after updating to 7.2 to work around some issues they encountered, some of which have been fixed, and nobody reported VSS issues after doing so.  But those people might not have used MrCbtTools.exe to uninstall it.

That was a very good question! Indeed, when uninstalled via Programs and Features the VSS timeout does not occur. I was not aware that it could be done that way too (I have only been using Macrium for about a month). Apparently removing via Programs and Features uninstalls more. I saw that when the CBT driver is uninstalled that way mrcbtttools.exe is also uninstalled. Moreover, when after uninstalling via mrcbttools.exe I uninstall (without first installing the CBT driver again via mrcbttools.exe) via Programs and Features the VSS timeout also disappears. For now I have a system without CBT, but also without possible BSOD's. It is however a bug somewhere, because, as I wrote, uninstalling the CBT driver via mrcbttools did not cause a VSS timeout in Reflect v7.1.3319.

Thanks for your help!

Glad I could help!  And you may well have just helped surface a bug that will get fixed in a future Reflect update, since I agree it's strange that uninstalling CBT that way would break VSS even though uninstalling through Programs and Features is "comprehensive".  But I'm glad you've at least got a workaround in the meantime. Smile
