USB too small?

Talented Member Group: Forum Members Posts: 64, Visits: 430	Hello - I have a working recovery bootable USB. The only thing on it (its 16 gig) is the Macrium PE "stuff". Checking in properties it says only 257 MB are in use (270.xxx.xxx bytes). I've got a 500 MB USB thumb/stick drive that the rescue media creation wizard says is too small. The 500 MB should theoretically be almost twice the space needed. Does anybody know what's happening here? Thanx in advance for your help, Art H.

Macrium Evangelist Group: Forum Members Posts: 14K, Visits: 83K	I agree it should work and I don’t know the technical reason it doesn’t, but FYI the troubleshooting guide for that error says to use a flash drive that’s at least 1GB: https://knowledgebase.macrium.com/plugins/servlet/mobile?contentId=1998869#content/view/1998869 If you really wanted to, you could follow the manual Rescue Media creation steps and have the wizard generate an ISO, then open the ISO and copy the files to that small flash drive you manually prepped: https://knowledgebase.macrium.com/plugins/servlet/mobile?contentId=3276955#content/view/3276955 However, given that you can get even good 16GB flash drives for about $8 now (I use SanDisk Ultra Flair drives for this purpose) and that an upcoming release of Reflect will be generating larger Rescue Media anyway if you want to use certain features, you may just want to get a larger flash drive. Your preparatory remark prior to the second link about the ISO gave me the strong hint I needed and with the help of Rufus I have a tested USB recovery flash drive (I've never edited an ISO). Booting using the USB 2.0 sure seems slow after becoming accustomed to 3.0, tho. Probably the last gasp for this stick. You're also right about the inexpensive price of the flash drives; I ordered a couple of Toshiba 16 gig'ers yesterday for $6.64/ea ... Thanx again, Art H

You would just need to temporarily mount it so you can then copy the files inside it over to the flash drive. On Win8 and above, ISOs can be mounted by simply double-clicking them, at which point Windows sets up a virtual DVD drive. To unmount it, right-click the drive and select "Eject", or restart your PC. On older Windows versions, you'd either need third-party virtual DVD software (such as the free VirtualCloneDrive) or you can use applications that can allow you to browse the contents of ISOs without actually mounting them, such as WinRAR. That said, Rufus is a very good and convenient tool for creating bootable USB media directly from an ISO. Edited 3 September 2018 5:26 PM by jphughan

I hadn't thought of mounting it (nifty little utility - thanx for the tip) or using my 7zip to open it but both approaches work.
