The answer is very simple. Yes or No? John

The answer is not simple for those of us that have never had a need to do that. Reflect has always offered the user the ability to use its own cryptic naming convention to name its backup files as well as offering the user the ability to name those files as they wish, with some slight esoteric limitations. That personal naming ability along with the ability to COMMENT any backup taken has never caused a need for me to rename any of my backup files. Hopefully, a user that has had this requirement or one of our friendly Reflect Devs will stop by and take a shot at your question. If you'd like a swift answer, I'd fire the question off to < [email protected]>... they respond pretty quickly.

Although you can rename a backup set consisting of one full backup only, I suggest you retain the extension. I was wondering if you are just wanting a more descriptive backup name, if so you may also find the last reply to the following Forum case useful by adding more information in front of the Image ID of the file name: http://forum.macrium.com/Topic9364.aspx?Keywords=backup%20name Hope this helps Regards, et

In the process of installing Windows I create some half a dozen of images and add the names of the installed programs to the .mrimg filename. Each filename starts with an imagenumber (01,02,03 etc.) Then followed by (for example) 06 as 05 plus -program1 program2 program3..etc Filename may end up by being 120-140 characters in length, depending on what is all included. There is 1 drawback of such long filenames: once an image should be restored running Reflect from USB, the GUI is very basic 640x480 and the filenames are cut off in length, i.e. a part is displayed. This morning I had to do a restore but wasn't sure what was/was not included in the image... Had some luck, it turned out well, but it would be nice though if more space was given so as to display the full length of the image filename. In fact it would be nice if the GUI would be displayed in a higher resolution. As for the renaming: I have / had the same question as well: when after creating an image file, I remember that the image included some windows changes and/or a program that I had not mentioned in the filename, then in run the image -again- rather than changing the filename.

To save more information without complicating the actual image file, I just create a text file with the same name as the image except with a .txt extension. These are kept in a folder named for the computer that was imaged so I can remember which is which. The image file includes a brief note and the text file has all the relevant info. It's easy to edit the text file later if you need to. In windows explorer you can sort the files by date created then consult the text file to see more about a specific image. Using the example from that other post, win explorer might show this. E8FDB2DFC3978B13-00-00.mrimg E8FDB2DFC3978B13-00-00.txt E8FDB2DFC3978B13-01-01.mrimg E8FDB2DFC3978B13-01-01.txt It would be very nice if the original image name had the date appended to the end in the format yyyy-mm-dd. But it isn't actually necessary I guess. For example: E8FDB2DFC3978B13-00-00_20160904.mrimg and E8FDB2DFC3978B13-01-01_20160911.mrimg

I have the same question: is it possible to rename backups? I tried to use comments as substitutes for the backup file names, but it does not work because Macrium Reflect cannot arrange the files in alphabetic or numeric order according to their comments. For example, if I have two files, one of them has comment '1' and the other has comment '2', I cannot arrange them in such a way that file '1' is above file '2'. (By the way, I used internal spell checker located in bottom right corner. The spell checker underlined 'Macrium' word because it believes that this word is misspelled.)

Yes, you can rename backups after they are created (using Windows Explorer). However, if you use one of the renamed backup files as the basis for creating a new backup (by right-clicking the existing backup file and selecting Run Backup), the new backup will be named using the original naming scheme.
I don't know if this helps, but in Windows Explorer, you can also make the Backup Comment be one of the displayed columns, and you will be able to sort on this column just like the other Explorer columns.
Also, if you provide a little more detail about the type of information included at the start of your comment (i.e., the information that you are trying to sort on), we can determine if there is a better way to achieve the end result that you are trying to achieve.

+xAlso, if you provide a little more detail about the type of information included at the start of your comment (i.e., the information that you are trying to sort on), we can determine if there is a better way to achieve the end result that you are trying to achieve. For example, I have been backing up three disks called A, B, and C for several years. Macrium Reflect displays list of these backups in random order. I want to display them in such a way that they are divided into three groups. In other words, all backups of disk A should be next to each other in the list. By the way, I do not understand why Macrium Reflect includes Image IDs in the file names. The Image IDs may be important to the programmers who made the Macrium Reflect, but it is gibberish to the users. When I use Acronis True Image backup program, it does not include this gibberish in the file names.
